In news that has scared the wits out of bank tellers across China, one man has decided to purchase a shiny new vehicle, valued at over US$100,000, with over half a million 1 yuan coins.
Spare a thought for the poor folk who had to count up all those coins! Luckily for all involved, the buyer (a man surnamed Gan) was kind enough to wrap up the coins in little parcels to make things a little bit easier.
As a report by local media explains, Gan decided to pay with the coins (which weighed over 4 tons!) because of his occupation working at a nearby gas station.
As part of his job, the local bus drivers would pay for their gas in coins, and Gan was able to accumulate a substantial fortune from this income.
When it came time for the payment, it took 10 staff members over an hour to transport the cash from Gan’s truck into the auto shop where he made his purchase.
Netizens in China who commented on the Weibo story conservatively estimate it took over three months for the bank tellers to count the stash. By that time, the car had already depreciated in value by 10%.
