Chinese authorities have recently busted gangs operating in the meat packing business, which are trying to sell expired meat – in some cases up to forty years old – on unsuspecting consumers.
So far this year 21 gangs have been apprehended by the police, with 100,000 tons of dodgy meat confiscated, including beef, pork and chicken.
According to expiry dates found on the packaging, some of the meat apparently went off back in the 1970s, no doubt disgusting anybody who has eaten at a Chinese all-you-can-eat barbecue restaurant in the last decade.
It’s also alleged that the ancient meat merchants were trying to create the world’s most disgusting meatloaf; no doubt if they had been able to continue with their evil plans they would have surely succeeded.
So the next time you’re heading out for a meal at a steakhouse in China, be warned: it may be wise to bring along a carbon dating machine. Chinese netizens have taken to Weibo to complain about the trend and also report some restaurants that they suspect may have served the old meat. “I went to an all-you-can-eat BBQ last weekend and it only cost 1 yuan (US$0.10),” wrote one resident of Harbin. “I am concerned that this meat may have been expired.”
